BOHS P400 – Asbestos Foundation Module

This course is designed as a progression route to the asbestos proficiency qualifications for surveyors and analysts. It gives candidates an introductory level of knowledge on the health risks of asbestos fibres, and how to manage asbestos-containing materials in their work. The course is in line with the Foundation Material in the HSE’s Appendix 9: Recommended core competences to be achieved via on-and off-the-job development in HSG248 Asbestos: The Analysts’ Guide ( 2nd edition, July 2021). The appendix recommends underpinning competences for all subsequent development of the surveyor /analyst.

WHO IS IT FOR?

If you are training to become an asbestos surveyor or analyst, this course is for you.

LEVEL

The level of a course or qualification indicates the relative complexity and depth of knowledge and skills required to complete the course or qualification. This is a Level 3 qualification in the BOHS qualifications framework.

HOW IS IT DELIVERED?

The P400 course will require at least 8 hours of study time, of which at least 6 hours will be taught (teaching and practical assessments) and 2 hours will be independent (in your own time). In addition there will be a 30 minute examination.

CONTENT/LEARNING OUTCOMES

Overall aim

To provide you with foundation background knowledge of the health risks associated with exposure to asbestos fibres, and to provide guidance on relevant legislation and safety procedures for managing asbestos-containing materials.

Learning outcomes:

On completion of this module, you will be able to demonstrate your understanding of:

  • The past uses of asbestos and the types commonly used
  • The health risks posed by asbestos
  • Control limits and Exposure standards
  • Outline of the legislation and guidance pertinent to individual roles
  • Individual roles and their need for integrity and independence
  • The requirements for PPE, how to use it and decontamination procedures
  • How to deal with incidents especially in the laboratory environment

  1. Asbestos types, their utilisation, health effects, control, and exposure limits
  2. Legislation and guidance documents
  3. The role of the Analyst / Surveyor
  4. Personal protection and decontamination procedures

Assessment

You will need to pass a 30-minute multiple-choice examination within 12 months.
