That’s a huge number published in a recent report from The Asbestos Testing & Consultancy Association (ATaC) and the National Organisation of Asbestos Consultants (NORAC) who have analysed more than a million lines of data from 128,000 asbestos surveys across the UK.
Over 500,000 of the buildings in the study containing asbestos had a level of damage, and 24% of those would be classed as work requiring specialists. These findings are particularly sobering since 5500 deaths a year in the UK are caused by historic asbestos exposure.
As well as being potentially unsafe, that figure is likely to contain a number of businesses that are opening themselves up to lawsuits and fines for not adhering to asbestos regulations. Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, if you aren’t sure if a building contains asbestos, you should err on the side of caution and act as though asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are present unless proven otherwise by a reputable asbestos survey.
These findings really highlight the importance of having professionals investigate buildings and sites. Although they’ve looked at over a million asbestos surveys, this figure is from one study and is likely to only just be scratching the surface as to exactly how many buildings, both domestic and business, contain asbestos.
We work with all kinds of organisations, from businesses and venues to schools and property developers. For those who don’t have experience dealing with asbestos, we do offer training, but for those who have no idea where to start or what kind of survey they might need we can help from the start.
It’s a big problem, but we’re here to help solve it. If you manage a building or are in charge of a project that requires knowledge of ACMs, please feel free to get in touch with us rather than burying your head in the sand. Asbestos can feel like a big problem, but it doesn’t have to be. We’re here to offer support and advice, as well as practical solutions, every step of the way.
