John Meates

Having worked in the asbestos industry for three decades, John has gained considerable experience in this field of occupational hygiene and is one of the leading experts in asbestos management techniques in the UK today.
John began working in the industry in 1986, employed to deliver a wide range of analytical and surveying services. His career as an asbestos specialist gained momentum through working with a range of regional and national consultancies including OHS Ltd during which time John was responsible for delivering a range of complex contracts to public and private sector clients as both a project manager and delivering bespoke training courses.
Immediately prior to establishing Environtec Ltd, John spent time in the development of both inspection and testing capabilities in terms of quality management and gained significant experience in the process of gaining UKAS accreditation particularly for asbestos laboratories.
Environtec Ltd was established by John in 1994 and was created out of his desire to deliver a “one-stop-shop” of environmental consultancy services to the leading companies in the UK.
This desire and drive has led the company to its current position of being one of the leading safety consultancies in Europe, employing over 100 staff in a network of offices and laboratories located throughout the UK and on the continent.
John believes the secret to the company’s success is down to the professionalism of his staff, the commitment to his clients and the company ethos of honesty and flexibility.
John currently sits on the Asbestos Control and Abatement Division (ACAD) Technical Committee and consults with the Government on and shapes legislation and associated guidance and best practise. John is also involved with the British Occupational Hygiene Society (BOHS) and is both an approved BOHS trainer and practical examiner.
John’s desire to deliver comprehensive and high quality health, safety and environmental consultancy solutions has not diminished and is pleased to be the leading company in the UK in terms of offering fully integrated compliance services.
John’s principle responsibilities are for the maintenance of the UKAS accreditation and for financial control.
John is married with four children, lives in Chelmsford and supports West Ham United Football Club.
